Dating: From Virtual Back to Reality

With restaurant patios, parks and even some recreational facilities starting to open, singles are taking their dates from virtual, back to reality. We are used to adapting quickly lately - so how will this transition impact your dating life moving forward? Together we are all figuring out this new beginning!

You may be ready to take the world by storm - however, your date could still have some concerns or vice-versa. For everyone’s comfort, it's smart to err on the side of caution. So add a few mindful steps to show your date you are a savvy single (even transitioning out of a pandemic). Once you are ready to meet someone in person, don't hesitate to have a conversation about social distancing (to touch or not to touch; that is the question). We are all aware that our social norms have changed, so it makes sense that our need to communicate has changed as well -- and that’s okay! Being proactive and having a casual conversation of how you have been "re-entering public spaces" will make everyone at ease for the date. Make it a conversation not an interrogation - start off by asking questions like "has anyone tried to shake your hand yet?" OR say something like, "I’m excited to see you in-person but I've been thinking about the best way to greet someone now, what have you been doing?” A good starter question should open the conversion to give you the insight you need.

After all, open communication is key in a relationship, so why not start early? Also, side note: people are attracted to thoughtful people with good etiquette. So, show your date that you are aware, thoughtful and have excellent dating etiquette by going the extra mile to establish the comfort level. Now that you have had the conversation and are excited about your upcoming meeting! Next, per usual, you ask yourself what am I going to wear?

When it comes to dressing for your date, you’ve heard us say it before, emphasize your assets. Now is no different - even with a mask on! It’s summer - embrace it with a classy, fun yet casual look. For men, some chino shorts and dockers with a pressed shirt - for women a sundress or flowy pants with a light top - it’s all about keeping you cool while looking your best..as things heat up!

The big question my clients are asking is, “should the mask match or compliment your outfit, or should it stand out and make a statement?” From our perspective the mask is about function; not fashion. However, we suggest a neutral solid colored cloth mask or respirator mask over the traditional surgical mask. It’s less jarring in appearance and will seamlessly match most outfits. Think of it this way, you want to look like you’re going on a date; not into surgery.

Now ladies...here’s an extra tip - make sure your makeup is transfer proof. There’s nothing worse than taking off your mask to find that half of your make-up has rubbed off onto the mask! We would suggest limiting the amount of facial products you put on and finishing the look with a light setting powder or spray. Disclaimer: lipstick or gloss not needed, unless you take your mask off! Be prepared either way, put it in your purse!

If you find yourself a little anxious (at first) about dating while social distancing, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Our clients are seeking guidance on how to connect while respecting social distancing (we know it’s an oxymoron). Just remember it’s different, but it’s still dating!
