Dogs as Date Bait: It works!

Sure, our furry, four-legged best friends can sit, stay and fetch... but did you know they can also help us find romance? A new study confirms what so many dog-loving single people already know - showing love for a pet makes us more attractive to potential partners. Read on to learn why pets are the perfect date bait and what other “social tools” we can use to snag the right significant other.

How can dogs help us find love? Not only are dogs loyal and fabulous friends -- they’re also a wonderful way to attract the opposite sex. In fact, a recent study of singles discovered that ladies are more than twice as likely as men to say that they are attracted to someone who has a pet and are also about twice as likely to judge their date based on how they react to their four-legged friend.

Since many pet owners see their dog as a member of the family, women naturally assume that a man who dotes on his dog might be a good dad someday. On the flipside, guys often view a woman who has a dog as wanting to settle down and have a family right away… so that can sometimes scare them off. Either way, if two people discover that they are both animal lovers, they’re that much more compatible and it could lead to a good match.

Dogs parks are always a good place to start because you can start a conversation over your mutual companions. You’ll also want to find out if any bars or restaurants in your area offer ‘yappy hours’, cat cafes, or other events designed around pets.

At it’s Just Lunch, we always advise our clients to find new places to go and to explore what’s out there. A common interest is always a great way to start a conversation. If you don’t have a furry friend, any hobby or activity can be a wonderful way to meet someone new. For instance, if you love running, join a running club. If you enjoy cooking, sign up for a couple of classes. Not only will you be doing something that you enjoy, but you’ll have new opportunities for meeting others who share similar passions.

Oh—and sorry, cat lovers… while our feline friends are great, they’re not as good at attracting romance as dogs, at least for guys. The same study found that 1 in 3 women says that a guy with a cat is a potential deal breaker. As for the guys, they say that they’re more likely to use a dog over a cat to attract a potential date.
