Weddings and the “Plus One” Dilemma

We’ve all been there. A wedding invitation arrives for you and “a guest”, and your single self panics a bit. The inevitable questions begin: “Will I be dating someone by then? Should I go solo so I’m available to meet other singles? Should I bring a friend?”

Do NOT bring:

Your Ex

It may seem natural to bring your ex if you are still on good terms. They likely know the couple getting married and possibly the guests as well. Don’t do it! It is unhealthy to put yourself in a romantic setting, mostly likely with alcohol, with someone for whom you’ve had feelings for. Weddings are supposed to be a celebration of love, not a chance for you to relive your past.

A First Date

Or worse, a blind date. Yes, this happens. Do not waste an opportunity to get to know someone new by bringing them to an event where there are so many distractions. First dates should be one-on-one, and not involve potentially awkward introductions with family and friends.

DO bring:

Someone you’ve been dating

Weddings can be very romantic and a great place to amp up a relationship that’s already going well -- so one of the best “plus ones” is the person who you’ve been dating for a few months. If you ask the person you’ve been seeing to be your plus one, make sure you discuss ahead of time what your expectations are and how you’ll introduce each other so no feelings are hurt.

A good friend

Every wedding is different, so if you’re not sure if it’s OK to bring a friend as your plus one, just ask! If you can take a friend, make sure it’s someone who won’t add drama and will make the event more fun. Think about the type of afternoon or night do you want to have -- then use that as your guide to pick the right person.

Yourself

If you’re stressing out too much over who to bring, go solo! That way you only have to worry about yourself. Plus, you might meet someone there; weddings revolve around love, romance, and happy endings so other guests may be looking to meet someone new too.
